Is Palworld a Generative AI Pokemon Knock-Off?
That’s what everyone seems to be saying these days. Truth be told, the CEO of Pocket Pair (the developer of Palword), Takuro Mizobe, showed interest in creating an AI experiment related to Pokemon. But that is the only link between AI, Pokemon, and Palworlds.

Here’s a breakdown of the situation to help you grasp the nuances:
Background of the Game and Controversy
- Palworld’s Popularity: Within three days of its Early Access launch, Palworld became a highly popular game. However, its rapid rise in popularity also sparked controversy.
- Some accuse Palworld of borrowing elements from Pokémon for its “Pals,” suggesting a lack of originality in character design.
- There’s also a simultaneous claim that the developers, Pocket Pair, used GenAI in the game’s development. However, as of now, there is no solid evidence to support this.
Evidence and Speculations
- As stated above, Mizobe showed interest in AI and Pokemon, but there’s no proof that any of the Pals were generated with AI. Later, Mizobe later commented favorably on the use of GenAI, which irks some, but not me (you can see all my previous posts on GenAI)
- In 2022, Pocket Pair released “AI: Art Imposter,” a game that included an internal GenAI system. Players would guess the origins of AI-generated images. The game’s description sparked debate over whether it was serious or ironic in its approach to AI and art creation.
Current Situation
- Lack of Conclusive Proof: Despite the CEO’s interest in GenAI and its use in a previous game, there is no concrete evidence that GenAI was used in the development or design of Palworld.
- Widespread Speculation: The game is often labeled as an “AI product,” but this is based on speculation and association rather than hard evidence.

My Perspective
- Critical Thinking: This situation presents an excellent opportunity to discuss the importance of critical thinking and not jumping to conclusions without evidence.
- Understanding AI in Creative Fields: It’s a chance to explore the role of AI in creative industries and the ethical considerations surrounding AI-generated content.
- Media Literacy: This controversy can be used to teach media literacy, emphasizing how information and rumors can spread, and the importance of verifying facts before forming opinions.
In summary, while the allegations against Palworld and its development team are significant, they currently remain unproven. It’s crucial to approach such controversies with a critical eye and a focus on evidence, making it a valuable teaching moment about the intersection of technology, ethics, and media literacy.
